The of the Commonwealth is King Charles III. He is king of 15 states, known as the Commonwealth , while 36 other members are republics, and five others have monarchs. Although he became head the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, the position is not hereditary.

Commonwealth enjoy benefits in some member countries, particularly in the United Kingdom, and Commonwealth countries are to one another by high rather than embassies. Member states have no obligations to one another, though various , judicial and military arrangements exist countries. The Commonwealth Charter defines their shared values of , human rights and the rule law, as promoted by the quadrennial Commonwealth Games.

A majority of Commonwealth countries are states, with small developing states constituting almost half its membership.
