Malta came under British rule the early 19th century and as the headquarters for the Mediterranean Fleet. It was besieged the Axis powers during World II and was an important base for North Africa and Mediterranean. Malta achieved independence in , and established its current parliamentary in 1974. It has been member state of the Commonwealth Nations and the United Nations independence; it joined the European in 2004 and the eurozone union in 2008.
